Paintball Markers: Tactical, Spyder, Angel, Tippmann, And Used Paintball Markers

Largely eschewing the traditional label of gun, paintball markers are the main component of the paintball sport. Paintball markers are sometimes alternately referred to as paintball guns, but the paintball community largely emphasizes paintball markers over guns. Paintball guns sound like dangerous weapons, which paintballers emphasize is false since markers were originally used to mark trees and cattle with colors.
There are several well-known brands of paintball markers used in the sport today.
Tippmann is just one brand offering many types of paintball markers. Tippmann's paintball markers come in both pistol and rifle form. The Tippmann K-200 pistol mimics a real firearm in weight and size. With its 6 mm barrel, the K-200 has a shooting range of up to 50 feet and can fire BBs or paintballs at 60 rpm. The K-200 is also fitted with a fiber optic sight to help shooters improve their accuracy.
At an MSRP of $29.95, paintball enthusiasts do not have to shell out a lot of cash. For something a little more intimidating, paintballers might want to check out the Tippmann X-7. Tippmann's website claims the new X-7 is the most customizable paintball marker out today. This 4.1-pound, semi-automatic paintball marker has an 8.5-inch barrel and is ideal for long-distance shots with a range of over 150 feet. The Tippmann X-7 has a list price of $329, which includes gun oil, the barrel sleeve and maintenance pack.
Another quality paintball markers manufacturer, Spyder's products are categorized into series: the MR, VS and Classic series. Generally speaking, Spyder Classic series models are less expensive, but there are price overlaps between models in all series. The Spyder Victor, Spyder's cheapest marker, features a 9.5-inch barrel and no-slip rubber grip. The majority of Spyder's paintball markers fall between $100 and $200, but a couple pass the $300 level. In the MR series, Spyder offers a semi/automatic electronic gun, the MR3, that can shoot up to 25 balls per second. The sizeable MR3 comes with an adjustable shoulder stock and a removable sight rail with handle.
One model in particular stands out as a dominant name in the paintball community. For those truly serious about paintball competition, WDP's Angel model is viewed as the Mercedes Benz of paintball markers. Angels easily run over $1000, but some discount stores sell an Angel for less. Angels are technologically advanced markers, and are thus intended for similarly advanced players. Many of the models come loaded with features not often seen in other paintball markers such as navigation systems, LED displays, USB ports and diagnostic systems.
Like other kinds of sports equipment, paintball markers can be bought used as well as new for paintballers on a budget. Even those who have money to burn may find the price of paintball manufacturer WDP's famous Angel model a little too expensive. While used Angels are hard to come by, there are many used paintball markers available by other brands such as Tactical and the aforementioned Spyder. Specialty paintball sites exist, but paintball enthusiasts can find used paintball markers on eBay. A hardly used Tactical ZX pistol is currently being sold on eBay for just $10.50.
Those new to paintball will want to rent their equipment when they go to paintball sites their first few times. After experimenting with a few different styles of paintball markers, they can find a design that they like before making a purchase. Brands such as Spyder and Tippmann do not sell guns directly from their site; prospective buyers should look in their yellow pages for sporting outlets that sell paintball markers.
